Valorphin is used as a pharmaceutical agent with opioid analgesic activity (binds to mu-opioid receptor, IC50 14 nM; also binds δ-opioid receptor with IC50 200 nM, no κ receptor affinity). It exhibits analgesic activity in mice, rats, and rhesus monkeys (ED50 ≤5.2 mg/kg s.c.), and antitumor activity (100% tumor cell death in vitro with epirubicin/vincristine; 42% tumor growth inhibition in vivo).
